Amazon, the e-commerce giant, unseats Google in the first position as a product search engine with 44% more direct searches

An online store is the best product search engine. It’s possible? It seems that consumers on the Internet are increasingly using Amazon to see the characteristics of the products they want to buy.

Amazon breaks records every day. Currently, it has become the benchmark for online store customers, with a spectacular figure of 44% of users looking for products on the Internet, relegating other search engines, such as the almighty Google, to second place.

Behind Amazon, we can find Google, Bing, and Yahoo, but with a market share, between them, that does not exceed 35%. These data are deduced from a study recently carried out by the specialized company BloomReach.

Changes in Internet users, a new way of searching

Until very recently, it was unthinkable that a consumer who went to buy something on the Internet would not search on Google. But now everything has changed. Amazon is the first choice and now with the launch of  Amazon Dash, the tool to buy from anywhere, the race for the first position has only just begun.

The detailed description of products that are made on Amazon allows you to visualize and differentiate the characteristics of the items that you want to purchase. For this reason, of every 10 consumers who search for information on the Internet, 9 looks at Amazon.

In addition, the opinions of consumers who have already bought a product that we are looking for, favor when choosing between one or the other, but beware, these opinions are not always real, but many times they are manipulated through incentives.

One of the consequences of this trend is the concern of sales and marketing managers of different online businesses, who are seeing how their jobs are beginning to be in danger.

Google vs Amazon: the fight to be the first product search engine

For two years it has already been seen that Amazon is Google’s main competitor. In 2014, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said:

“Many people think that our main competition is Bing or Yahoo. But really, our biggest search competitor is Amazon.”

The main area of competence of the two companies is in the search for products. The different reports show the evolution of Amazon, whose proportion is becoming greater each time. Thus, since October 2015, Amazon accounts exceed 40% of book sales and more than 60% of online sales. This data means that, in an analysis of both commercial spaces, Google is in second place and fighting for first place.

In fact, only in Spain during Black Friday 2015, did Amazon obtain 30% more sales and it was the period of the year in which it received the highest number of visits.

New Ads on Google

Among the novelties of Google, an important update was announced a few months ago, which would cause excellent search results in the giant, achieving a greater number of conversions and clicks.

This expanded text ad, with twice the number of characters as normal, standardized texts, seemed to be a real revolution. It was about offering a new format, with the possibility of doubling the characters of the advertisements, offering more information about articles and products.

But the reality has been disappointing for the main Internet search engine. The click rate has not changed much, although the cost per click has been reduced.

Orders in an hour

What does Amazon offer? What’s new? Why this Amazonmania? Orders were delivered in less than an hour from your request.

Amazon’s “Premium” Service makes it possible for users of the platform in some cities, some environments, to receive their orders in less than an hour. This includes fresh food.

This Amazon service is already available in different cities such as Milan, Paris, and Berlin. In Spain, on the other hand, ultra-fast home delivery was already beginning to be seen with other brands, such as Mercadona, Carrefour, and El Corte Inglés.

Conclusion

Everything goes through Amazon and that could endanger e-commerce for many online stores if the e-commerce giant were to control everything in the market.

On most occasions when we have searched for the same product both on Amazon and in the distributor directly, we have seen that the price was much lower on Amazon than on the brand itself. Well, this is because Amazon adds products with a high turnover to its inventory, thus controlling the price, so these stores cannot compete against it.
