In its latest report, EAE Business School analyzes how the impact of electronic commerce has changed global supply chain management

Although the Spanish market in terms of online purchases has exponential growth, Spain is at the bottom in terms of online efficiency. For approximately 5 years, Spanish eCommerce has grown by at least 10% on average per year. And it is that half of the Spaniards who have access to the Internet already buy on the Internet, despite the fact that it is one of the countries in Europe with the least logistical efficiency in terms of online consumption, according to the report The Impact of eCommerce in the management of the global supply chain, prepared by EAE Business School.

Delivery time is reduced but 3 out of 10 deliveries fail

According to this report, Spain has the worst logistics figures related to eCommerce. It ranks eighteenth in the EAE ranking compared to other European countries in terms of efficiency. Although the delivery time has been reduced since 2014, the delivery process is unsuccessful in 3 out of 10 cases. For example, the average delivery time in 2014 was 8 days and in 2017, it has been reduced to 5 days, and even now online stores offer the option of “Same-Day Delivery”.

What is the main reason that these home deliveries fail?

That 30% of these home deliveries fail is due, in most cases, to the fact that the customer is not available at the place of delivery, mainly at home. The quality and expiration of the product may be affected and therefore the number of claims or returns may increase. To this, we must add that the user has high expectations regarding the home delivery of the products he buys on the Internet, and one in five users requests a maximum service of two days.

Solutions to failed delivery service

Many eCommerce propose the alternative of delivering in different time slots and delivering at other convenient points. A good example, of its proposal, is home delivery of food in two-hour time slots, but assuming additional costs with the logistics provider and this, not all operators are prepared to offer and comply with them.

Online purchases by autonomous communities

In Aragon, 52.8% have bought online in the last month, followed by Asturias, with 47% of inhabitants who have bought products or services online, and in the third position is Galicia, where 46% of the population has Purchased an item on the Internet in the last thirty days. On the other hand, the communities with the least online consumption are Cantabria and the Canary Islands. Only 30.4% of Canarians have bought online in the last month and 34.4% of Cantabrians have purchased some goods or consumption through electronic commerce in the last thirty days.

Most outstanding eCommerce examples

Amazon uses automatic robots to prepare orders and as the latest development, this e-commerce giant will launch a warehouse in El Prat (Barcelona) in October in which 3,500 robots will move 50,000 shelves, almost nothing. On the other hand, El Corte Inglés has made a strong commitment to the online channel and, last year, the company launched the click&express  service on its e-commerce platform, getting packages to be delivered in two hours.

Another example that we know is Zara, which also makes vertical integration one of its foundations to increase its efficiency. With this, the Inditex group has managed to shorten deadlines and establish greater flexibility with a reduction of inventory to a minimum. Last year, the company incorporated the multishuttle system at the Bershka plants in Tordera (Barcelona) and Arteixo (A Coruña), to increase the efficiency and precision of shipping times.
