This selection of strange films will surprise, laugh and terrify. And it will also make you puzzle over whether it was symbolism, or whether the director with the scriptwriters and the entire film crew are just sitting on something.

Have you ever seen a movie that makes you want to look the director in the eye and ask what the hell he made? Then welcome to the sweet world of the best mindfuck movies that just break your brains and roll balls for videos.

But first, check out our project:  Big Talk About ‘It’. All about sex in the digital age and about:

Who are digital sexual and what turns them on?
What is teledildonics?
Why are people in polygamous relationships?
Is it possible to find a cool sexual partner on Tinder?

Lobster” by George Lantimos

The dystopia by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos is a parable about loneliness that has never been and never will be considered the norm. In the center of the story is David, who, like all single people, is sent to a sanatorium for 45 days, and during this time they will have to choose two paths: either find a soul mate there or choose an animal into which he will be turned after the expiration of the term.

Page of Madness by Teinosuke Kinugasa

East is a delicate matter. But not so subtle as to ask from the first frames: “What the hell is going on here?” The film by Teinosuke Kinugasa, filmed back in 1926, is scary, strange, creepy, touching the soul, and even makes you fear for your psyche after watching it. Thought to have been lost in the bombings of World War II, the film was thought to have been lost in 1971, but the director found a copy in 1971 and redesigned it to create an avant-garde something that will appeal to anyone who wants to puzzle over weird movies.

“After Darkness, Light” by Carlos Reygadas

“After Darkness, Light” by Carlos Reygadas

Everything seems to be in order in a wealthy Mexican family: its head loves his wife and two children, they live in a cool house in nature. But only a man periodically brutally beats his dog and tries to build relationships with the servants. Day after day, holiday after holiday, scene after scene, we are watching this and are already starting to get bored, when suddenly a drawn red devil appears in the frame, and everything starts to turn upside down.

“Annigilation” by Alex Garland

You have probably heard of this film. Natalie Portman and many other eminent actors played in it. The film tells about an anomalous zone called “Flicker”, which captures more and more territories of the United States. An expedition is sent there, each member of which hides a sad story: someone has cancer, someone has lost a child from leukemia, and someone is taking drugs. And, perhaps, this is the most normal of all the strange films in our selection.

“Celina and Julie are completely liar” Jacques Rivette

A big nod to the Proustian streams of consciousness and Alice in Wonderland – otherwise this picture cannot be described. The main characters Selina and Julie are inseparable, but also completely different. They learn from each other, coexist, and often change places. It’s a weird picture that’s hard to figure out, wild and completely wild, but worth seeing.

Richard Linklater’s “Blur”

Why is this movie worth watching? Well, Keanu Reeves is there, and he’s so adorable. But it’s also a great visualization film. The name of the picture literally echoes with its design: the characters are turned into unsteady and strange cartoons, gloomy and with rough lines. The protagonist receives the task to figure out himself and his friends and also learns that there is a rat in their environment, which gives information to the police. The director accurately conveys the peculiar aesthetics of borderline states and the ugly underside of an unstable society that poisons itself.

Inland Empire by David Lynch

There is no one who makes strange and philosophical films better than Lynch. He creates something confusing and strange in the “Inland Empire”, and at the end he gets an ideal mindfuck film by all canons, telling either about an actress, or about prostitution, or about the songs of Nina Simone. And what do these three giant rabbits have to do with it? In general, nothing is clear but very deep.

“Swiss Army Man” by Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan

A strange film about a guy stranded on a desert island and his buddy Manny (played by Daniel Radcliffe). The only problem is that Manny is dead. Literally. However, this does not prevent him from actively talking, living, and even doing all sorts of things with his friend. This is a strange, psychedelic, and sometimes terribly funny story of a guy’s friendship with a corpse, and after watching it, people usually ask in bewilderment: “What did I just see?”

“Neon Demon” by Nicholas Winding Refn

In this film, talking about beauty, Elle Fanning showed that, for all her external beauty, she can be terribly scary, and that she would not be wanted to meet in a dark alley. She plays a girl with a perfect appearance who comes to a big city to become a model, but gradually this place and the people around her change. Jessie (that’s the name of the heroine), gradually becomes just as soulless and empty, albeit beautiful in appearance, and then dies a terrible death.

“Mud” by John S. Baird

The film “The Dirt” introduces us to the immoral and debauched life of police officer Bruce Robertson, who is so eager to get a tasty job that he goes crazy. He pits colleagues against each other, sleeps with other people’s wives, and ultimately finds himself in a noose from his own game. This film is strange, crazy, like the original source, mocking and creepy, and James McAvoy in it really scares with its plausibility.

Way South by Roxanne Benjamin

This is perhaps one of the strangest new horror movies ever, and one that evokes both disgust and a subtle sense of dread. Everything revolves around one place – the road to the South. In total, the film fits five stories that are interconnected and reveal the darkest and most hidden secrets of the main characters. And there are creepy monsters and believable special effects. Definitely worth a look.
